Places & surroundings
The Val di Chiana takes its name from the name of canal that allowed the reclamation from swampy lake to productive land to cultivate. Home of the famous "White Beast", a Chianina cattle that has been selected in this valley as a working animal.
The medieval village of Etruscan origin, 7 km from the farm Il Cipresso will surprise you with its narrow streets full of history, its churches and its magnificent view.
Pieve della Sassaia di Rigutino
The church of Saint Quirico was built presumablly in year 1000 AD and was successively restored in the current configuration in the XV century as you can see from the inscription in the external architrave.
Probably around this church had settled the people of Rigutino with their houses. Its height above sea level of approximately 400mt allowed the inhabitants to live far from the unhealthy morass to the feet of the hill.
Today the lived area surrounding the church is called Sassaia di Rigutino and has become a fraction of the main town that has developed to the feet of mount Lignano.
The church has been recently restored and from its wide balcony in front of the entrance facade you can enjoy a magnificent sight on the below valley.
From the farm Il Cipresso you can reached it with an easy walk covering a path between the olive trees in approximately 10 minutes.
